I often have the question asked of me, "I'm going to the Mayan Riviera, what do you suggest I shouldn't miss while I'm there?" It ocurred to me I ought to put that here!
One of my favorite restaurants is actually north of Playa del Carmen in Puerto Morelos, Los Pelícanos. It’s right on the beach and you won’t be disappointed.
If you like culture and archeology you must go to the ruins at Tulúm. And if you have the time you shouldn’t miss Chichén Itzá. It’s inland but how can you go to that region and miss it?
If you would like to be gently carried down a fresh water river in an inner tube you probably want to go to Xel Ha. It’s a park so it is a little touristy but Mexican tourists go there too!
Rent a car or take a taxi and go to Coco Beach and spend a lazy uncrowded day. There’s a small restaurant bar there with restrooms.
Do not miss having dinner at the Mayan restaurant Yaxche http://www.mayacuisine.com.
Have an evening stroll up 5th Ave. in Playa del Carmen.
